Venetian Pool

The beautiful and majestic Venetian Pool originated back in the 1920’s when quarrying to build Coral Gables left a massive hole in the ground. Finished in 1924, the general intention was to spare the locals the sight of an ugly limestone crater. Apart from an ideal place to cool down, the pool, when drained, acted as an amphitheatre, hosting concerts and beauty contests.
The pool proved to be a roaring success, and further entertainment was provided. This included water shows by the famous Olympic swimming champion, Johnny Weissmuller, and swimmer-actress Esther Williams. Lectures were also given by William Jennings Bryan.
Venetian Pool remains a wonderfully relaxing place to swim and just chill out. With its dainty cobblestoned bridges, porticoes, palm trees and three-storey observation towers, Venetian Pool, for its architectural beauty alone, is certainly worth a visit. Weekdays are normally the quietest and most peaceful times to visit. The water is clean and fresh, being recycled using natural ground filtration and hygiene is top priority with management. It is advisable to bring your own snacks and refreshments as they can be quite pricey to buy. Try to avoid the school holidays, as it tends to be a bit manic.
