MIAMI

Traditionally a quiet retirement and vacation city, Miami has been transformed over the last few decades into a thriving, buzzing multinational metropolis. It has emerged as the economic core of US-Latin American trade and safely houses billions of South and Central American dollars from countries whose economies faced near ruin. Traditionally unpopular and unfashionable, Miami Beach at the southern end of South Beach, was completely and very successfully restored, providing the base for the famous Miami Vice cop show and for a massive Calvin Klein advertising campaign. The area has been transformed, and is now littered with top recording studios, model agencies, chic cafes and restaurants and celebrity owned nightclubs. Although South Beach is generally regarded as Miami’s hub or focal point, several other areas in the city, including Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne and Coral Gables, all have qualities and a lot to offer.
Miami is very multiethnic, and the greater Miami area has a population of 2 million, while the city itself plays home to about 360,000 people. These inhabitants include approximately 770,000 Cubans, 100,000 Haitians, 72,000 Puerto Ricans, 40,000 Jamaicans and Bahamians and 23,000 Dominicans. About half of Miami’s inhabitants can speak Spanish, while ‘Spanglish’ (mixture of English and Cuban-Spanish found only in Miami) is also very common. This large influx of foreign immigrants was frowned upon by some people, but in reality it has helped give Miami a much more exciting and vibrant element. In the past there have been notable differences between some of the city’s inhabitants, but in 1992 Hurricane Andrew struck and caused devastation. Many people regard this natural disaster as the saving of Miami in a strange way. It acted as a magnet and drew the people together as one. If your’e looking for a place with year-round sun, beautiful beaches, top notch restaurants, clubs and bars, or the chance of bumping into your favorite celebrity, then Miami is the place for you.
