Fairchild Tropical Garden

Miami is one of the few places in the United States where both tropical and subtropical plants grow all year round, and this stunning garden provides a perfect example of this wonder. Opened to the general public in 1938, Fairchild Tropical Garden gets its name from David Fairchild, a distinguished tropical botanist and resident of Miami. Not only does this 83 acre area of breathtaking beauty boast an enviable amount of tropical plant life, but it also runs regular educational programmes.
Miles of pathways weave through the gardens around eleven different lakes and the best way to appreciate this is to take the 40-minute tram tour which provides a leisurely yet very enlightening experience. The tour price is covered in the entrance fee. The tram passes endless species of plants including palms, cycads and bromeliads. Less common ones include baobab, a fascinating African tree and the ylang-ylang tree, the aromatic oil of which is used to make the famous Chanel No. 5 perfume. A massive conservatory explores the threatened ecology of the rain forests while the 1939 gatehouse has been converted into a fascinating museum of plant exploration.
Opening hours are 9:30am-4:30pm and there are refreshments available. It is worth while keeping an eye open for special weekend events. For natural beauty at its best and most breathtaking, Fairchild Tropical Garden is a must-see.
